A Little Bit of Broadway
Zorro has been fascinating readers and viewers ever since his debut in 1919 in pulp writer Johnston McCulley’s The Curse of Capistrano. People clamored for more, and they got it when, the next year, Douglas Fairbanks became the first actor to don the trademark flowing Spanish cape, flat-brimmed Andalusian-style hat, and black cowl mask. Over 40 films, 11 television shows and now two stage shows later (and that doesn’t count the comic books, serials and computer games) , Zorro has become part of the American universal myth – everyone knows the wily fox, Zorro.
Today’s musical is the 2008 West End musical based on the 2005 Chilean author Isabel Allende's prequel, the mock biography Zorro: A Novel. Filled with swashbuckling and swordfights and falling in love, it pits Don Diego against his childhood friend Ramon, who has taken over the pueblo and has become a tyrant. The music is by the Gypsy Kings and the flamenco-based score makes you want to dance! It closed last March, but we can always hope that it comes across the pond.
Act I
Flamenco Opening - gypsies
Baila Me - Diego, Inez, gypsies
Libertad - Women of the pueblo

One More Beer - Garcia, Inez, women of the pueblo
Djobi Djobi - Inez and Luisa
Hope (reprise) - Diego
Man Behind The Mask - Luisa
Fiesta - Whole cast
Music: Gipsy Kings & John Cameron
Book and Lyrics: Stephen Clark & Helen Edmundson
• Don Diego de la Vega/Zorro – Matt Rawle.
• Luisa – Emma Williams.
• Ramon – Adam Levy.
• Inez – Lesli Margherita.
• Sergeant Garcia –
• Don Alejandro de la Vega – Jonathan Newth.
With the few minutes remaining, I want to play one more Zorro piece of music. For those of us of a certain age, our very first Zorro was presented to us by Walt Disney. Guy Williams portrayed the dashing Don Diego and swung his way into many a little girl’s heart. So, to finish off the show, we’ll listen to the theme song from the Disney TV show.

A Little Bit of Broadway
Inspired by last night's Juneau Symphony pops concert, we are listening to the 1960 Lerner and Lowe musical Camelot.
The first musical to follow the duo incredible My Fair Lady, it opened to mixed reviews, but that was to be expected. After all, how could anyone follow the practically perfect My Fair Lady with another pracically perfect musical? But Camelot is a very fine show -- with lots of memorable music. Naomi Siegel,in her New York Times review of the 2003 review, says "Camelot has it all – a beautiful English princess swept off her feet by a shy, but passionate bachelor king; an ardent French knight, torn between devotion to his liege and an uncontrollable hunger, reciprocated, to be sure, for the king's tempestuous wife.... Camelot features a score rich in English country-tune charm..."
We are listening to the original cast recording this afternoon, with

Irving Berlin was the most American of composers, perhaps because he was an immigrant.Last night's medley just didn't touch on anywhere near enough of his musical gift to the American Songbook. Well, I finished watching the awards ceremony and have the following comments:
Neil Patrick Harris did a great job – things kept moving along, the jokes were kept to a minimum but were there and mostly understandable to those of us at home (that hasn’t always been the case). His singing goodnight was great!
After watching the scene from Next to Normal, my comments when I played the cast recording several weeks ago are definitely reinforced. This is a musical that you have to see to appreciate. I was very impressed by the scene and especially by Alice Ripley. She well deserved the Tony for best actress in a musical, if that’s the kind of work she is producing 8 times a week.
I liked the way they handled the technical awards presentation. I really do understand why they don’t do it in prime time, but the announcements for those of us at home (with the listing of who was nominated, who won and a snippet of their acceptance speech) was well done. Would that we had only heard snippets from those who got their award in prime time!
The memorial. It’s not until you put them all together do you really all the wonderful theater folks we have lost in the past year. And I really liked watching the lights dim on Broadway in remembrance.
Jerry Herman rocks!!!
What didn’t I like – most especially the “mass” acceptance. Having everyone – cast, crew, producers, etc etc etc - take the stage for the acceptance speech left me irritated. And there were too many audio technical problems during the show.

A Little Bit of Broadway
May 31, 2009
A warm, sunny Sunday afternoon deserves fun music – farce, frolicking and just a fine time. So we are listening to Jerome Kern and P.G. Wodehouse’s delightfully silly “lost musical” The Cabaret Girl. Written in 1922 especially for Dorothy Dickson, it played for over a year in London but never made it across the pond….until these past few years, where small companies across the US have been reviving this gem.
It’s a simple story of Jim, who wants to marry Marilynn, but his aunt has to approval the marriage or he loses all his money. Marilynn is an unemployed musical comedy actress who wants fame on the London stage and does not want to be the country girl Jim wants her to be.
The plot line may read “serious” but don’t you believe it! There are lots of wonderful one-liners and patter and silly complications until, in the end, everything turns out to be “the berries”.
This recording is by the Ohio Light Opera and includes some of the dialogue! This operetta sounds and feels like pre- WWI British music hall and is one of the last of this type that Kern wrote. By 1925 Kern had met Oscar Hammerstein II, and begun work on his masterpiece – Show Boat.
Composer: Jerome Kern
Lyricist: P. G. Wodehouse
Artists: Ohio Light Opera
Label: Albany TROY1103-04
